The democratic opposition is in Rome with four hands, because the conference is interested in hearing the voice of the true Albanians and not the voice of a political clown. That is how the chairman of the Democratic Party, Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha, began his speech yesterday at Rinas airport, before leaving for the Rome conference.
Berisha said that present at the conference are representatives of the government of the Socialist Party, who represent and continue the known offensive against Kosovo, the decree banning the free movement of Albanians from Kosovo and for the Albanians of Macedonia. “I am not saying anything unknown, but in recent days the Albanian government, from an anti-national position, has been trying to extend the ban, to prevent at the Qafë Thanë customs crossing the free entry into the homeland of Albanians from Macedonia. Berisha considered this move an unconstitutional act, since according to him Albanian citizens from the former Yugoslavia have the right to move freely according to their choice. “This criminal social government has turned Albania into a ghetto and is trying to extend these discriminatory acts to all Albanians. The future of Albanians is a Europe without walls and borders”.
Berisha said that with the presence of the opposition the government has supposedly been “vindicated” and its representatives, in Rome, “supposedly represent Albania better in the eyes of the world.” “The truth is that our purpose in going to Rome is to hear up close what is being prepared for the Albanians at the Rome table and, on the other hand, to sensitize public opinion and potential investors that Albania is not Nano’s Albania and that of his government, which emerged from the robbery of the century, with an unchecked communist offensive against the opposition, with its barbaric execution through unconstitutionality”.
The chairman of the PD described the Rome meeting as a “test and not a conference” and said that “Kosovo and the other ethnic Albanian areas of the former Yugoslavia remain a major issue. A nation suffering the blackest hell of the Serbian red dictatorship. If for centuries invasions and barbarism have swept over the Albanians of Kosovo and other ethnic areas, today the governments in Tirana are locking the borders that divide the nation, creating a deep anti-national divide”.
According to Mr. Berisha, civilized Europe must understand that the need to rebuild Albania must not proceed separately from the need to create guarantee mechanisms for foreign investments. “There are sufficient legal statements by high-ranking European and American personalities that the government that emerged from a coup d’état will not be recognized. These are statements that discourage investors in Albania. We demand that political pluralism in Albania be strengthened and respected so that investors can see this country with confidence”.
Speaking about the message that the Albanian opposition will convey today to Europe in Rome, Berisha said that this opposition represents in Rome the vast majority of Albanian society, which was forcibly excluded from representation in government by the coup d’état. “We are here to advance the positions of this majority and not to defend the Socialist government and its coalition, which gave the country the ugliest image in Europe, increased hatred, conflict and distrust. Now we will state and make clear to Western investors that the democratic opposition sees their investments as a partnership in rebuilding Albania through free competition and the rule of law”.
The opposition’s participation in Rome, according to Berisha, represented a chance to sensitize the institutions of the European Union and investors that the processes of democratization and stabilization of Albania are an irreplaceable condition for the reconstruction and development of the country. At the end of his speech, Mr. Berisha announced that the leadership of the PD will meet after returning from Rome to assess the progress of the conference proceedings and the measures that need to be taken afterwards.
